Christmas Wish: Find WorkWhen shopping this holiday season, don’t forget that for millions of unemployed Americans, the most important gift you can give is a job.  And you can make a real difference for people struggling to find work in this country by simply making an effort to buy American during the holidays (and beyond).

Most people don’t really consider themselves job creators, but the truth is every time we spend our hard-earned money, we are creating jobs – somewhere.

Decades ago the vast majority of goods consumed in this country were made in the USA, so pretty much however one spent his money, there was a good chance most of it was going toward American job creation.

But over the years, the percentage of goods found in stores that are made in America has decreased dramatically.  When we buy goods from overseas, that’s where the money goes, and that’s where the jobs are created.

So nowadays, we can’t just buy things with no regard for where they are made.  Unemployment is too high for that.  We need to pay a little more attention and make an effort to buy things that are made in USA whenever we can, especially when we can find items of equal or better value comparably priced.

Little by little those made in USA purchases add up, and they turn into jobs for Americans who need work.

It saddens me to think of all the parents out there this time of year, who want nothing more than to provide a joyous Christmas (or other holiday) for their children, but don’t have the means to provide it because of joblessness.

Even if it’s only for a few weeks around the holidays, try to make an extra effort to buy American.

If enough of us will do it, we’ll have more work to go around in this country, and a few more smiling children on Christmas morning.

Take the Buy American Challenge today.

Happy Holidays!

Until next time, here’s to doing what we can to support our country by buying American.

American-made Bissinger's chocolates make a great made in U.S.A. gift for your Valentine.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner.  That means there is a good chance you will be buying a gift or two for that someone special in your life in the near future.  When shopping for your boo, why not consider a few gifts that are Made in the U.S.A.?  Here are a few Valentine’s Day gift ideas you might want to consider.

Perfume or Cologne – You might not have realized it, but there are several top selling brands of perfume and cologne that are made in the U.S.A., such as DKNY, Polo, Euphoria, Guess, and Safari. For a great selection of American-made fragrances click here.

Lingerie – Believe it or not, there is some really beautiful (and dare I say, sexy) lingerie that is made in the U.S.A. There is a company called Hanky Panky has been making their ladies’ delicates in the U.S.A. since 1977, and their stuff is top of the line.  You’d be hard pressed to find nicer lingerie anywhere.    They also sell all kinds of thongs, panties, and sleepwear.  Check it out.  Hanky Panky is the best kept secret in lingerie.

Chocolates – There are lots of American-made chocolate and candy makers out there, but here is one of my favorites.  Bissinger’s has been making fine French style confection chocolates in St. Louis since 1927.  They also have an amazing assortment of Valentine’s Day boxes that are really perfect for a Valentine’s Day gift.  If your heartthrob has a sweet tooth, you can’t beat Bissinger’s.

Champagne (Sparkling Wine) – Okay, technically it is impossible to buy American-made Champagne because for a bottle of bubbly to be called Champagne, it must come from the Champagne region in France.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t buy American-made sparkling wine which is a virtually identical product, and just as enjoyable to share with your Valentine.  Here is a list of the top 10 rated American sparkling wines.  A really great bottle can be had for around $30.  You can buy some American-made sparkling wine at All American Winery, a vendor that specializes in American wines.

Have fun buying American while you shop for your Valentine.

Until next time, here’s to doing what we can to support our country by buying American.

New Year's ResolutionsIt’s just after the New Year, which means millions of Americans are embarking on their New Year’s resolutions.  As a result, cigarette sales are down and fitness centers are crowded.  People everywhere are making a commitment (even if it’s short-lived) to improve some aspect of their lives.

Here’s a very worthwhile resolution worth considering – every time you buy something this year, do everything you can to buy an American-made version of that item.  Every community in our country is experiencing high rates of unemployment.  When you buy American-made goods, you are doing your part to create American jobs, of which so many of our friends and neighbors are in need.  Not to mention, American products tend to be of the highest quality.

I am making this commitment, and I’m asking those to whom I am closest to join me.

Please consider making this worthwhile New Year’s resolution as well.

Until next time, here’s to doing what we can to support our country by buying American.

The 4th of July is getting close and everyone is getting excited.  Independence Day is sure to bring BBQs, fireworks, and general fun in the sun. As you get ready for the big weekend, don’t forget to stock up on H2O, as temperatures are sure to get up into 80s or 90s, and you are going to want to stay well-hydrated.

When you stock up, be sure buy American.  Bottled water is one of those items where the American-version and the foreign-bottled version are virtually identical.  So, why not buy American and do your part to create American jobs?

Two of my favorite brands of bottled water are Aquafina and Dasani.  These brands can be found anywhere, they are both bottled in the USA, and they are also owned by American companies.  That means buying these brands gives you the most American-job-creating bang for your buck.

These are two of the most popular brands, but there are more than a hundred American bottled water brands out there.  Be sure to reach for one of them when you crave that high quality H2O (yes, that is a Waterboy reference).

Until next time, here’s to doing what we can to support our country by buying American.
